Valve Launching Source Filmmaker

On Wednesday Valve Software announced the upcoming release of Source Filmmaker (SFM), a storytelling tool the studio developed inside the Source Engine to create all its animated short films. The SFM condenses the production pipeline of an animation studio down onto a single gaming PC, Valve said. "The goal of the SFM was to develop a story telling tool that allowed us to create computer animated movies more efficiently, and with greater creative freedom," said Bay Raitt, designer at Valve. "Over the past five years, we've produced more than 50 animated shorts with the SFM."

Raitt added that the Source Filmmaker tool will allow Valve's community to create their own movies in Team Fortress 2 and in their own Source SDK-created mods. Currently the movie-making tool is in closed beta, but is expected to be made available later on this year via Stream free of charge. To celebrate the announcement of the SFM, Valve also released the ninth and final short in the "Meet the Team" series today, "Meet the Pyro." The video caps off a three-day "Pyromania" event taking place over at the http://www.teamfortress.com/pyromania/ website.

Man Excavated His Basement Using Only RC Scaled Models

Home modifications are seldom thought of as cheap, fun, or even remotely interesting, that is unless you come up with an unbelievably awesome method to perform such modifications. One Canadian certainly made use of his creative muscles when excavating his own basement. The process may have been staggeringly long, but who else could say they excavated their basement using nothing but RC toy-sized trucks.

It certainly isn't the most efficient method for excavating a basement, but it could be quite entertaining if you are an RC fanatic. The mysterious “Joe” from Saskatchewan has been working slowly but surely on an ongoing project to excavate the basement of his own home—at an annual rate of 8-9 cubic feet for seven years (2005 to 2012).

While slow, Joe enjoys finding new ways to adapt scale models with different functions and tools to solve problems with the excavation—like a real life million piece puzzle. The 17 year RC veteran has kept his passion for the hobby alive by giving his creations a purpose and meaning through his mining project, and plans to continue doing so until completion.

20 Minutes of Resident Evil 6 Gameplay

Leon Kennedy shot the president. Well, a zombified, flesh-hungry POTUS, but still, that can't be good for the old resume. Capcom dropped 20 mintues of Resident Evil 6 gameplay on us today, and in the opening sequence, the undead leader of the free world takes a bullet. Spoilers be damned! So go on ahead and push play if you don't mind ruining a few surprises in RE6.

It's looking like Resident Evil 6 is going to feel like somewhere in between the run-and-gun mentality of the Resident Evils 4 and 5, and the more calculated, slow pace of the earlier games in the series. I like that they seem to be taking a step backwards, as RE5 felt a bit too... shooty for me. Resident Evil 6 is out October 2, but if you can't wait, I'd recommend just watching these videos over and over again while holding a controller in your hands. It'll be almost like the real thing.

Final thoughts on Windows 8: A design disaster

Honestly this comes has no surprise, well not at lease to me anyway, flicking through HardOCP and came across this post about the Final thoughts on Windows 8. Over the last seven months or so I think no buddy has noting nice to say about Windows 8, every time I would read comments on the articles I would fine people ranting about how bad the new OS is more then the new features that got added. I guest you can say I'm one of them because I can't stand the new look of Windows 8 as a platform to do real-world work on, Windows 8 feels utterly unusable, and that’s down to one thing — the “Metro UI” user interface.

$6k High Tech Floor Mat

Just Cause 2 Getting Multiplayer?

People loved Just Cause 2. With all the crazy grappling/parachuting/action-stunting in Avalanche Studios' 2010 hit, why wouldn't they? But Rico Rodriguez' adventures didn't have anything by way of online multiplayer, which would've made an already good game even better. Oh, well, JC2 lovers can dream of what might've been, right?

But one group of those people are doing more than just dreaming. They're building a mod that will make multiplayer a reality for the PC version of Just Cause 2. The Australian indie developers first showed proof-of-concept on their JC2 multiplayer work two years ago but then mysteriously fell silent until only recently. In an update on their official site, the JC-MP devs said that their non-communication was the result of hitting a wall in terms of progress. But, as the video above shows, they seem to have found their mojo and are preparing to unleash all sorts of random open-world mayhem.
