Qualcomm Tests S4's Thermal Efficiency with Butter

Snapdragon's S4 SoC is a powerful piece of technology. However, while most of the S4 focuses on the chip's 28nm process or its future powering Windows 8 devices, Qualcomm is out to show off a different aspect of the SoC with its latest video proving the thermal efficiency of the S4. To demonstrate how its product stands up against rival solutions, the company took three phones, one based on the Snapdragon S4 and two more mystery devices labeled only as 'Competitor A' and 'Competitor B.' Using a thermal camera to measure the thermal footprint that the three phones leave during peak performance, Qualcomm displayed the results on the heatmap.

Still, why look at a heatmap when you can perform a similar test using butter? Its heatmap demonstration complete, Qualcomm placed big chunks of butter on each device. You don't need to be a scientist to figure out what happened next. "Butter melts at 35 degrees Celsius," said Qualcomm's Vidyasagar Rao, later adding that the phone heating up the most was hitting 55 degrees Celsius. Yikes. Check the video to see the buttery action for yourself.

Corsair Announces New Dominator Platinum DDR3 Memory

A Walk-through of Nintendo's Wii U Controller

Nintendo's Wii console certainly shook things up when it launched in November of 2006.Wii U with its unique tablet gamepad, looks to do the same. The idea is that players will use the buttons on the sides of the tablet to game on the big screen while the smaller touchscreen panel on the controller itself will be used to display maps, weapons, or other content related to the game the user is currently playing.

Though the console won't be launching until the end of the year, Nintendo has been drumming up excitement for the Wii U since June of last year. The Wii U was first shown at E3 2011 and Nintendo has an updated design at E3 2012, which is taking place this week.

To keep us interested, Nintendo has released a walk-through video of the Wii U tablet controller as well as a second, longer video that looks at the console, controller, the hardware powering the Wii U and the games that you'll be able to play when it launches.

Know CPUs were made of sand? Yes, but I like your video.

Intel has released an animated video and supplementary PDF document to explain how Intel CPUs are manufactured. The video is more “cute” than anything else although the document is surprisingly really well explained for the average interested person. If you have ever wanted to know how a processor was physically produced then I highly recommend taking about a half of an hour to watch the video and read the text. You should do yourself a favor and check out the video below.

If you have ever wondered how CPUs came to be from raw sand -- prepare to get learned. Intel has published a video and accompanied information document which explains their process almost step by step. The video itself will not teach you too much as it was designed to illustrate the information in the online pamphlet.

My background in education is a large part of the reason why I am excited by this video. The accompanied document is really well explained, goes into just the right amount of detail, and does so very honestly. The authors did not shy away from declaring that they do not produce their own wafers nor did they sugarcoat that each die even on the same wafer could perform differently or possibly not at all.

Ivy Bridge goes over 7GHz mark

Core i7-3770k on Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H motherboard An overclocker from Taiwan managed to get his Intel Core i7-3770k Ivy Bridge CPU past the illusive 7GHz mark, of course with some help of LN2.

The overclocker who goes by the name of HiCookie managed to get the Core i7-3770k as high as 7.03GHz with some help of liquid nitrogen cooling. As a mater of fact, this is actually a fully validated world record with Ivy Bridge CPU. The Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H motherboard, Corsair memory and AX 1200 PSU were also part of the overclocking testbed, and CPU was wroking with enabled hyperthreading but three cores were disabled.

In order to get it to 7032.7MHz, the voltage was set at 1.956V, FSB was at 111.63MHz with 63x multiplier. Of course, this was done on an ES sample of the Core i7-3770k and some extreme liquid nitrogen cooling but it is still a great result.

Elecom Projection Keyboard Connects Wirelessly to Devices

Lasers projections and digital interfaces controlled without a standard touch interface have become a staple of the science fiction genre over the years. While it certainly wasn't the first to make our mouths water, Minority Report provided us with some exceptionally awesome nerd candy in the form of high-tech computer interfaces.

Several years ago, such technology would be nothing but the dreams of an imaginative mind. But now, we have come closer and closer to replicating such digital interfaces and the TK-PBL042BK Projection Keyboard by Elecom is just one of many reasons why. Compatible with iOS and Android operating systems and connecting via Bluetooth, it is primarily designed as a projection keyboard for cellular devices, but can also be used via USB for other non-Bluetooth enabled devices such as a notebook or computer.

he projection keyboard itself is a small black box that projects the image of a keyboard onto a surface, which can then be manipulated like a real keyboard (except without actually pressing keys, but the light projected images of the keys). The box itself provides feedback to the device when fingers or other appendices break the projection on the surface. To further distinguish the TK-PBL042BK, it also has a mouse mode which operates in a similar fashion as a laptop's touchpad.

Remastered Doom 3 Bundle

A re-mastered Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil combo pack will be released this fall. Doom is finally heading back to the PC and consoles with a new release, but it's not the sequel you're looking for: it's a re-release of Doom 3. More specifically, Bethesda has announced the upcoming launch of Doom 3 BFG Edition which will feature the original third installment and its Resurrection of Evil expansion pack, both of which have been completely re-mastered.

In addition to the re-mastered games, the upcoming Doom 3 bundle will include seven new single-player levels entitled "The Lost Mission." Little else is known about the added content for the moment, but id Software said that it has addressed one of the biggest complaints about Doom 3: the flashlight. The studio has added an armor-mounted flashlight to the player's suit, allowing them to illuminate dark corners and shoot enemies at the same time.

Unfortunately, it seems that the re-mastered aspect applies only to the console versions. Doom 3 originally appeared on the first Xbox back in 2005, but the re-release now sports enhanced graphics thanks to the processing power of the newer Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 hardware. Other added features include optimization for 3D displays, 5.1 surround sound, Xbox 360 Achievements, PlayStation 3 trophies, improved rendering and lighting, and a new check point save system. id Software has also fine-tuned the controls.

Windows 8 Release Preview Now Ready for Download

Microsoft accidentally let the cat out the of the bag that it would be releasing the Windows 8 Release Preview May 31. As a result, we weren't to surprised to get a press release from Microsoft announcing the launch of Release Preview. Included in this version of Windows 8 are several new apps, including ones for travel, news, and sports, as well as some more general tweaks throughout the platform.

If you're a Consumer Preview user, be sure to look for changes to Mail, Photo and People as well as more personalization options for the Start screen, improved multi-monitor support (which we talked about here), a fine-tuned approach to downloading apps through the Windows Store, new family safety features, along with enhanced privacy and security controls for online browsing.

"This is our final pre-release, and includes Windows 8, Internet Explorer 10, new Windows 8 apps for connecting to Hotmail, SkyDrive, and Messenger (and many more), and hundreds of new and updated apps in the Windows Store," said Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky, adding that user feedback helps contribute to the development of the product.

"Since our first preview release last September, millions of people now use the pre-release product on a daily basis and millions more have been taking it through its paces, totaling hundreds of millions of hours of testing," Sinofsky said. "We genuinely appreciate the effort that so many have put into pre-release testing, and of course, we appreciate the feedback too.

Direct feedback and feedback through usage contributed to hundreds of visible changes in the product and tens of thousands of under-the-hood changes." Today's Windows 8 Release Preview brings us one step closer to RTM and then an actual physical launch. Microsoft says they should be in the final stages of RTM in about two months' time.
