EVGA introduces Android overclocking

EVGA has announced its latest Z77-touting motherboards and at the same time unveiled a vision for our ubiquitously computed future. It’s got PC and phone working together in perfect harmony, the one symbiotically adapting and informing the other. Just as happy computers should be. Thanks to an Android-friendly version of its Precision X tuning software, you can have your games running their beautiful virtual worlds in immersive high resolution on your PC screen. On your phone, meanwhile, there’s a touch sensitive interface for tuning your CPU and graphics clockspeeds without flicking back to the desktop.

I think it was ASUS that first introduced overclocking via a smartphone with its Republic of Gamer boards a few years ago, but EVGA does seem to have caught up. The Precision app will be able to take control of your BIOS settings from the moment you hit boot thanks to a Bluetooth connection to the motherboard and take control of all the tweaks available in the new GeForce GTX 680 chips. It’s a neat trick, although now that CPUs and GPUs can overclock themselves if left alone to do so, possibly not one you’ll be calling into action once the novelty has worn off. Want to know more? There’s a video of phone and PC working together in perfect harmony.

Windows 8 line up simplified, renamed

Remember trying to figure out which version of Windows 7 you owned or needed to install if you were putting it on a fresh hard drive? With six different variations to choose from, you wouldn’t have been the only one who got confused between Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Professional, for example. You would be unusually proficient if you could remember exactly what the differences between each one were, however. Apparently Microsoft has learned something from the criticism. In a blog post yesterday, Brandon LeBlanc from the Windows team revealed that there will be just three versions for x86 systems, and one for ARM devices. That’s officially just a third less befuddling, then.

In order to maintain the necessary level of confusion appropriate to any Microsoft launch, the ARM OS has been renamed Windows RT, which is the same name as the underlying architecture for Metro apps on all systems. At least that’s only likely to frustrate developers, mind, and not the public at large.

For most of us there’s Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. These correspond roughly to Home and Office versions. Most of the features are shared, but only Pro will get drive encryption with BitLocker, Hyper-V, Group Policy tools and Remote Desktop hosting. Keeping the network admin stuff for Pro seems like a good idea, although it’s a shame that BitLocker isn’t a universal tool when we could all do with a little bit security in our digital lives.

A further version, Windows 8 Enterprise, will only be available for volume licensing. LeBlanc’s post is a little vague as to what that will include beyond ‘advanced security, virtualisation, new mobility scenarios and much more’.

Finally, there’s another version called Windows 7, which it’s suspected will remain the popular choice with gamers despite only being available from shader backstreet dealers or refined from the blood of old hard drives.

Deep Black: Reloaded now on Steam

The year is 2047… oil has run out… governments have collapsed.” It all sounds a git grim in the future. That probably explains why people are going underwater to have third -person battles in suits designed by Master Chief’s tailor. Biart7‘s Deep Black: Reloaded is available on Steam right now for £18:39/$23.99, or on the official site for £15.99. There’s also a 432MB demo available for download.

We haven’t played this yet, but there’s certainly potential for some fun wet/dry shooty action, even though there’s no multiplayer. You might want to dust off the Razer Hydra if you’ve got one too – Deep Black supports the quirky little thing.

New ArmA 3 Trailer Reveals Second Island

In a new trailer for the upcoming military simulator ArmA 3, a smaller second island is revealed. This 16-square-kilometer island will be available for players to fight over, in addition to the 300-square-kilometer main island. ArmA 3 is shaping up to be a military shooter of unprecedented size and scope.

The ArmA series remains a breath of fresh air for those looking to get away from the Call of Duty formula of first-person shooter, with an emphasis on realism rather than explosive arcade-style action. The vast open terrain lends the game some truly incredible vistas, and there's nary a series of corridors to be found.

Max Payne 3 Official TV Spot Surfaces

Rockstar is getting serious with its Max Payne 3 marketing, as the official TV spot hit ESPN last night during the Lakers/Spurs game. The one minute spot didn't contain anything that we haven't seen already, but looks very cool nonetheless.

Crysis 3 Teaser Trailer

GameTrailers.com now offers a teaser trailer for Crysis 3, Crytek's upcoming first-person shooter sequel. This teaser is shorter than the commercial it follows, but it concludes saying to expect a gameplay trailer on April 24th. In the meantime we get glimpses of the game's depiction of a partially overgrown NYC, that new bow weapon, and, of course, plenty of hexagons.

No Joke: Watch Conan O'Brien, Andy Richter Voice Halo 4

The best part of the segment is when Conan and Andy are actually in the studio recording their heavily improvised voice-overs. They play on the lameness of the roles with comments like "I sure hate my life," "I'm sorry, I didn't hear what you were saying -- I was peeing in my suit," and "This is a pretty sweet union we're in: stand near the crates but don't ever move them.
